It is very important to TAKE YOUR TIME on this step as your business/website name is a very important branding factor in attracting customers and representing your business.
If this is the first time you’re hearing about the tern “Domain Name” then here is a crash course.
A domain name is your website name.
A domain name is
anaddress where Internet users can access your website. A domain name is used for finding and identifying computers on the Internet.
Computers use IP addresses, which are a series of number. However, it is difficult for humans to remember strings of numbers.
Because of this, domain names were developed and used to identify entities on the Internet rather than using IP addresses.
A domain name can be any combination of letters and numbers, and it can be used in combination of the various domain name extensions, such as .com, .net and more.website.com
Here’s why I’m stressing on choosing your business/ domain name wisely.
Here is my backstory!
I made the mistake of choosing my domain name casually for my first website and after a year, I realized that my domain name didn’t really represent my business properly.
Unfortunately, when I wanted to change it, it was too late, I had already shared a lot of backlinks and created a following which was going to be difficult to pass on to my new domain.
Not to mention the SEO rankings!
It’s not impossible to carry over your internet points to a new domain name, but it is not without it’s fair share of problems! If you can avoid it, avoid it!
I have created a checklist to help everyone with the domain selection process and towards the end of this blog post, I am going to share some tools that will help you brainstorm ideas when you’re feeling lost. Cool?
Now it goes without saying, that even before you start to think of a domain name, you must have a very good understanding of what your business is going to achieve.
This will really, really, really help you decide on a better name, so spend time figuring this out first!Pramod George
So let’s get to the checklist!
THE CHECKLIST – How to choose the best domain name
1. Is it brandable?
Before you think of a domain name, think of a brand name! Imagine a name you would hang in front of a physical store.
No one would name their brick and mortar store “10besttouristlocations”. A more realistic business name would be “India Holidays” or “Delhi Tourism”. Google prefers brand names to keyword stuffed domain names.
Another advantage of choosing a brandable domain is the ability to grow it and/or sell it.
It is easier for “DelhiTourism.com” to branch into other tourism services than it is for “10besttouristlocations.com” to do so!
2. Does it follow the KISS principle?
KISS simply means – Keep It Simple Silly!
When deciding on a brand name, think of the following!
- Is it short?
- Is it easy to remember?
- Is it easy to pronounce?
- Can it be easily confused with other words? eg: Die, Dye!
Decide on the shortest domain name you can think of. The biggest brands have simple, short and brandable names. Eg: www.google.com, www.amazon.com, www.landrover.com, www.newyorktimes.com.
If your domain name is long, it must be easy to remember.
Remember also to make sure that your domain name is easy to pronounce and not easily confused when you say it on your Podcast or YouTube channel!
After you’ve decided, make sure you check with your friends and family to validate if your domain name ticks these boxes!
3. Is it a “.com” extension?
Having a .com domain extension is a definite advantage in both SEO and practical terms.
Everyone assumes that a website’s extension is .com.
I remember I repeatedly searched for a website called Zencourses as www.zencourses.com when actually the website was located at www.zencourse.co.
4. Is itcopyrightfree?
Don’t get into any unnecessary legal hassles. Make sure the name you are choosing isn’t already associated with any other giant.
Do a quick Google search to see if there are any other businesses which have the same name.
Things To Avoid
- Don’t use numbers or dashes in your name. They are hard to type, look unprofessional and is not brandable.
- Don’t use spellings which can be misunderstood as another word. Like ‘to’, ‘too’, ‘hair’, ‘heir’.
- Don’t misspell! Please check your spelling before buying your domain name.
- Check to see if your domain name is available on social media platforms. This is an additional check that you might want to do when choosing a domain name. Check out https://namechk.com for this step.
It’s not possible to check all the boxes when deciding on a domain name but it is important to try!Pramod George
